Christmas trees are recycled into mulch and compost. Only real trees, free of decoration, lights, stands, tinsel and flocking can be recycled. There are three options for Christmas tree recycling:
Curbside residential collection
Whole tree curbside pickup is available throughout the County, except for in Sonoma (you should cut your tree down to fit inside your bin).
Recology customers: No service on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Year's Day. Service will be delayed by one day for these holidays.
Sonoma County Resource Recovery (SCRR) customers: Office will be closed Christmas Day and New Years Day. During these two weeks, Thursday and Friday collection will be delayed by one day.
Sonoma Garbage Collectors customers: Please note there will be no pickup on Christmas or New Years Day. Thursday and Friday collection routes will be delayed by one day.
Please set whole trees less than 6 feet, or larger trees cut in half next to your yard waste bin on specified dates:

For curbside tree recycling on regular collection days outside of the dates above, please cut down unflocked trees free of all accessories and décor to fit inside the yard waste cart with the lid closed. Do not bag your tree.

Non-profit whole tree pickup
Starting in 2025-2026, Zero Waste Sonoma is no longer hosting the voicemail system for this service. Local options may be available with a suggested donation of $15-25 depending on tree size. Please see signs posted in your jurisdictions for contact information.
