Local jurisdictions have contracts with franchised hauling companies to provide service for collection of garbage, recycling, yard debris and food scraps, and motor oil/filters for residences. Curbside services are also available for businesses.
Some materials can’t be recycled or composted in our local programs. Items placed in the gray garbage cart do not get sorted to recover materials. These materials are buried in landfills.
According to Sonoma County Code Section 22-24, violation of these bans can result in a $500 fine and/or jail up to 6 months. Additional penalties for violation of Sonoma County Code Sec. 22-7A can result in paying to the county a sum equal to three times the amount of the county standard tipping fee for the total refuse disposed (See Sonoma County Code Sec. 22-25).
If you have more garbage than will fit in your cart, County Refuse Disposal Sites offer reuse, recycling and disposal options.
Bulky Item Pickup is available to residential garbage company customers for items that are too large to fit in the garbage cart or that need special handling.
Another option for reusable items is donation to Secondhand/Charities before throwing items away.
