Your old mattress doesn’t have to end up in a landfill. Mattresses disposed of at County Refuse Disposal Sites, with the exception of Guerneville Transfer Station, are landfilled. Instead, dispose of your unwanted recyclable mattress through the Mattress Recycling Council's Bye Bye Mattress Program
The Bye Bye Mattress Program is made possible by a recycling fee that is collected when a new mattress or box spring is sold in California. When buying a new mattress, retailers are required by law to offer to pick-up your old mattress at no cost when they deliver your new one. When a mattress and box spring gets recycled, the steel, foam, fiber and wood become new products such as steel beams, industrial filters, carpet padding ,and even mulch for your garden. In fact, up to 80% of the components of a used mattress can be recycled.
Recyclable mattresses: clean, dry mattresses (any size) • box springs • futons. Not accepted: soiled or wet mattresses • futon frames • crib mattresses • dog beds • mattress toppers
