Lead paint

Did you know that approximately 70% of homes in Sonoma County contain lead-based paint? Lead paint can be found in homes painted before 1978 (also playgrounds). Major areas of concern are doors, door frames, windows, window frames and kick boards. Before doing repairs on homes built before 1978, find out if lead-based paint is present. Lead is a hazardous heavy metal that can cause health problems, particularly with young children. A blood test is the only way to determine if a child has been lead poisoned. Lead paint chips are accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

This page is for lead paint and lead paint chips. For lumber coated with lead-based paint, visit the Pressure Treated Wood page. Some out-of-county landfills will also accept lead construction materials.
