Pool Chemicals

These chemicals include chlorine, muriatic acid, sulfuric acid and are used to balance or disinfect swimming pools. Other chemicals can be introduced to “shock” the pool but are highly corrosive and reactive. Because of this, pool chemicals cannot be disposed of in your household garbage or recycling program.

When not properly disposed of, pool chemicals can cause skin irritation, release poisonous gases, and even create explosions or fires. In landfills, these chemicals might make their way into the soil and contaminate the soil and ground water. The best way to dispose of these materials and their containers is through Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) programs or facilities.
