County Refuse Disposal Sites prohibit the following items in the refuse/garbage:

According to Sonoma County Code Section 22-24, violation of these bans can result in a $500 fine and/or jail up to 6 months. Additional penalties for violation of Sonoma County Code Sec. 22-7A can result in paying to the county a sum equal to three times the amount of the county standard tipping fee for the total refuse disposed (See Sonoma County Code Sec. 22-25).

When visiting Refuse Disposal Sites, save time, money, and reduce waste by loading your truck to maximize reuse and recycling.

Quick Tips

  • Use tarps, bungee cords, netting, straps or rope.
  • Put lighter weight items at the bottom of the load.
  • Tie larger items directly to your vehicle.
  • Don’t overload your vehicle.

California State Vehicle Code, Section 23115(a), requires loads to be properly covered.

Sonoma County Code (Section 22-6) requires that all loads be covered when transporting refuse in vehicles on public roadways.

Step-by-Step for securing your load

  1. Pack your vehicle with garbage first, then reusable and recyclable items towards the back of your vehicle. You'll be unloading your reusable and recyclable items first, then garbage.

  2. Cover your load. It’s the law! State law and the Sonoma County Code (Section 22-6) requires that all loads be covered when transporting refuse in vehicles on public roadways.

  3. Free drop-off recyclables (see chart above for materials accepted at each site)

  4. Drop-off reusable items at Central Disposal Site

  5. Pay disposal fees.

  6. Dispose of what’s left. Only items that cannot be reused, recycled or composted should be landfilled.
